Pair of Retro Tonala Pottery of Mexico Bird Design Wall Plaques

My grandparents went to Mexico every year. They brought back several Tonalá animal figurines and I distinctly remember pondering them for what was probably too long. Those big eyes are so spooky but the cobalt blue was really comforting.

The ceramic production in Tonalá, known as the authentic mestizo ceramic is symbolic of Mexico's identity. Made of burnished clay or scented clay, these artistic objects are created for ordinary and decorative use. The tradition comes from the Tonalteca group.
